The Universal Rental Defense
- Never pay outside the platform. If a host asks for a wire transfer, direct deposit, or payment via email, it's a scam. Platforms have payment protection. Off-platform payments have none.
- Video-record the rental car at pickup. Walk around the entire vehicle with a phone video showing the odometer, all panels, the roof, wheels, and interior. Do this before you drive off the lot.
- Verify the listing independently. Google the address. Reverse image search the photos. If the same photos appear on multiple listings, it's a scam.
- Read recent reviews — and check for patterns. A listing with only 5-star reviews and no detailed comments is suspicious. Look for reviewers with multiple reviews on their profile.
- Document car damage returns with the agent present. Get a signed acknowledgment before you leave the lot. Take photos of the agent holding the signed form.
